When Dr. Doolittle sets out sailing to Spider Monkey Island with 9 and a 1/2 year old Tommy Stubbins neither of them really know what adventures await them. The story is narrated by Tommy and he fills us in on all of the wonderful creatures that accompany Dr. Doolittle on his adventures. In search of the great knowledge found in nature, Dr. Doolittle also hopes to come in contact with another knowledgeable chap named Long Arrow.
Lofting describes Dr. Doolittle's world so well that the reader is quickly transported into these spectacular voyages. The narration, provided by Tommy, is replete with fabulous tone and insight. The world painted by Lofting is suitable for any tween between the age of 9 to 12, and would also do a world of good for any adult to read that wishes to see the world through the eyes of a child. A classic for all time...

I adored Dr. Doolittle when I was younger, I wanted to be a vet - then I took Biology from a disaster of a teacher..... sigh.
ReplyDeleteHow funny! I did the same thing, course it would have been nice to know in bio that I would not have cut it as a vet. I went to vet school and then could not do the clinics--I loved them too much and did not see putting one down. I switched to a history major in order to finish my undergraduate...
